More fun with yarn

I was trying to make a hat without a pattern, and the
result was one that was too big and four baby hats.
Oh well, Kristina will have choices for her baby.

This was done without a pattern, I think the bottom may be a
little too tight for the adult head.

I finally broke down and got a pattern for the hat. Isn't it
cute? This is for my niece, Cari.

Pretty hat

After several starts and stops and different iterations I finished this hat for Emily.

The first pass at the hat with my trial flower.
It was a really pretty shaped hat, but it wasn't working.
I added a purple rim to make it look a little
more old fashioned

This is my first attempt at a flower. I will get better.

I pulled out the purple bottom and reworked the hat from
the flower down, giving it a better shape.

The beret kind of look

Emily really likes it and it is WARM!

Kinda Scary Doll Clothes

This was my doll when I was a little girl and she has
been naked for many years. We fixed that today.
It's just a little scary to look at this picture. I had no idea how freaky this doll looks.  She's better now that she's not naked. I think she needs a headband or hat to help with the crazy 40 year old hair.

We even added a button from the button jar to close the top
so the girls could change her if they wanted.

Really cool hat

Kathryn requested a red hat to match more
of her clothes.
I'm getting very quick at this and they are turning out great!
This yarn was very smooth and easy to work with as well
as being beautiful!

She seems to like it very much.

Projects

This is a shot of most of the things I've done in the first month of my new obsession. The Red, White and Blue scarf is for my friend, Sandi, who saw what I was doing and said she wanted one. I used it for practice on a cotton type yarn. Very cool and light.  The red, green, blue blanket is a doll blanket for Charlotte's bear.  Using up leftover yarn practicing granny squares.  The purple and pink squares are going to be a granny square throw (it's my long term project). And the Pink Scarf was a gift to Charlotte's Speech therapist.
The pink scarf on the left was a present and it turned out so great. I use a size 'N' hook with really luxurious, soft yarn and whipped that out very quickly. I was practicing my ridge pattern on it and it turned out great.  One skein of yarn used in that project.

Fingerless Gloves or Wristlets

This is the one thing that my daughters asked for. Both
Kathryn and Emily wanted fingerless gloves, so I watched YouTube
and started to figure it out.  This is Emily's right glove. Her
left one will be blue with green trim. Leftover yarn from
Kathryn's beanie, being put to good use. This is a double crochet
for the pattern on this with chains being used to create
the ruffle around the wrist.

Kinda looks like a fish

Learning how to do the ribbed pattern for Kathryn's
set. I have a pic somewhere of the completed set, but
can't find it right now.

Getting better

As time progresses and I watched more YouTube videos I got better and better at what I was doing.

This is a hat I made for Emily
This is the softest yarn, done with a large size hook

I did two different color yarns here and
joined them together to get this effect.
Turned out pretty well for an
early attempt. She loves it!

Practice, practice, practice

Janet taught me you can just try and try and if something goes wrong, you pull it out and start over again. I have made projects several times over just to get tension and counts correct.  Here are a few of the things I'm learning to do.

This is some practice I was doing to learn how to do single, double, half double, triple and half triple crochets.  I would just go back and forth practicing and then around the edges to practice turning .... I ripped this out and redid it about 10 times to just get practice. The red yarn was cheap and easy to work with, so it's become my practice yarn.

This was the first granny 'square' I attempted.  Makes a nice coaster

Goofing around with Granny squares I made this 'interesting' hat for Charlotte and a blanket for Emily's doll. I'm getting much better at Granny Squares.

Late evenings in Florida

Beautiful really soft yarn.  Gift for a friend.

rude grillers by Mike

A new thing for a new year

Hi there everyone ...

Janet and I have been getting into our crocheting since I was up there for a visit. So this year, our blog will be about the projects we are doing, rather than a picture a day.  Our brother, Mike, often times creates bird houses, grilling items and other cool things in his workshop, so he can post that type of stuff to share with us.

When the flowers start growing, we can include some garden shots because my sister and brother both have gorgeous yards. Mine is a work in progress, but I get started earlier because of living in Texas.

So ... I will start us off with some of the projects I've been doing since my sister taught me to crochet a basic scarf this past December.

Janet started me off with a basic chain and then a repeating SC pattern to make a square.   Our Dad taught her, but he could never teach me anything but a basic chain.  So, in a way, Dad taught me too because he taught her. :)

Here is the first scarf I made. The yarn was variegated and created the color pattern on its own. I have four skeins in this scarf and it is the first thing I've ever crocheted. It's a bit uneven, but so warm and so pretty. I used yarn from Walmart and since I didn't know if I was going to be continuing, I did bother to write down the yarn, size of hook or anything.  This is a basic double crochet back and forth and then I chained 10 and looped back into each opening for the ruffled ends.

This is where I decided to 'piece' two things together to make the edge look better and I didn't know what I was doing.  But you live and learn.

This is something I did right ... I love the way the ends turned out with the pretty ruffle along the edge.
